I might have just fallen in love with a food truck, you guys. It's no secret around here that I'm completely obsessed with anything to do with British history, culture, etc. So when Haley posted a picture from London Calling on her Instagram, I freaked out. I have a strange love for food trucks anyway, but a British food truck? I couldn't wait to try it out.
We first visited London Calling a couple weeks ago and fell in love with it immediately. The food was amazing (British food gets such a bad rap!) and it's such a friendly place--we ended up talking to Neil, one of the owners, for almost half an hour when he came to tidy up the bus (and yes, he's British).
It's such a fun setup--you order at the food truck and then head to the double-decker bus. The inside has been gutted and booths have been installed to give you a place to eat. These pictures are from our second trip this past weekend. Slick roads and icy parking lots couldn't keep us away. Besides, the bus looks pretty lovely in the snow.
London Calling specializes in pasties, which I described to my husband as "basically a calzone, but not pizza-filled." They have several varieties, but my personal favorite (so far!) is the bangers & mash. Yum! We tried the Banoffee pie (think banana pudding on crack with a graham cracker crust) and became pretty darn smitten with that too.
Oh, and I'm not sure how long they'll have it (I'm thinking at least through Christmas, but hopefully through the whole winter), but WASSAIL, you guys. Tyler had never tried wassail, and he was amazed. I could drink that stuff every day. So good!
For you locals (or upcoming Springfield visitors!) London Calling is located on the east side of N. Glenstone, between Chestnut and Division. Their hours are Thurs-Sat 10:30am-8:00pm. You can check out the menu here.
(FYI: This is not a sponsored post. I just think it's really important to support local businesses, especially the ones I love. I want them to stick around, after all!)

This looks so adorable. And that snow ! It's really funny how the menu has the Americanised way of saying it in brackets. We do the British way in S Africa, and so I'm always confused by candy and chips. We also have pastries, which we call pies. We fill them with meat, usually. Sometimes spinach and feta. I laughed at how you explained it. The thought of pies being a sweet thing in America is so strange.
ReplyDeletePS: my husband peeked over from next to me, and says that your husb looks like Jesse Pinkman. Haha. Must be the angle.
Haha, I can see that, actually! He used to get Noah Wyle a lot before he grew a beard.
DeleteI honestly think the British way makes more sense most of the time. If I could get away with calling chips "crisps" here, I definitely would! (Don't even get me started on the whole football/soccer situation!)
That looks amazing! The food sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteIf you're ever in Missouri, come to Springfield and I'll take you! :)
DeleteI freaking LOVE wassail. Every year my mom makes two crockpots full of wassail to sip on throughout Christmas Eve & Day. She didn't do it last year and I was PISSED (I made my grandma make some later in the day just to satisfy the craving!). And this year, I won't be at my family's Christmas and so I'm just not sure what to do about my wassail addiction. UGH. Gonna have to make a stop at LC this weekend to get some, in that case!
ReplyDeleteME TOO! We used to have it every year around Christmas when I worked at the bookstore. Tyler had never had it before! SO GOOD. I'm seriously forever indebted to you for telling me about LC!
DeleteI love London Calling. Except, without fail, the days I really want to go get some are the days they're closed!
ReplyDeleteI KNOW, right? The last time I was there, Neil said they were going to be open more days (I want to say Mon-Sat?) after the beginning of the year! Of course, that means more temptation.....:)
