This is my script: I fall in love with things a little out of my fashion comfort zone and buy them. Then I'm too self-conscious to wear what I've bought. I love them in theory, but doubt my ability to pull them off. (Anyone else relate?)
What I've noticed, though, is that when I push myself past the doubt and wear those things anyway, I love them even more....and I usually end up with a few compliments on my outfit from complete strangers.
Case in point: these leggings. Loved them, bought them....and then let them sit in my closet for a couple weeks. Every body-related doubt swirled in my head: You're too short to wear those; you'll look stumpy. Those will never work with your thighs. What were you thinking?
You know what, though? I freakin' love 'em. So take THAT negative, nagging, insecure, self-doubting voice in my head. I do what I want.
Dig into that closet and find that dress you bought but never wore. Put on that crazy hat. Wear those ridiculously impractical shoes. You can rock it. Be brave.
Dress: Modcloth // Slip: Envy // Tights: Target // Hat: Forever21 // Shoes: Target, years ago.
I love this outfit! And I totally get the nagging voice in my head that stops me from wearing my less "safe" clothes. It's always worth it when I do though!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It always takes me so long to work up the nerve for some of these outfits!
DeleteI can definitely relate. I have some printed leggings that I love and can't figure out how to wear them... but the one time I did wear them I got tons of compliments! (But I'm still nervous to wear them again.) I love your outfit girl. The perfect winter outfit! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so funny how that works, huh? It's almost like people want to be brave enough to wear them themselves or something. ;) And thanks!
DeleteI love this outfit. WANT THE SWEATER DRESS!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes. My Minnetonka Mocs. I love them so much, but am scared of them.
I was so super excited when you posted that picture on IG! They looked adorable! You should wear them more often, definitely.
DeleteYou look beautiful! Those leggings are so nice :). I always go through the same process and never wear my leggings out but I think I'll wear them tonight. Thanks for the extra inspiration.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, thanks. I knew I couldn't be the only one who did that! :)
Deletelove dem patterns.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree - I love scarfs and hats, but when it comes to actually wearing them, I freeze. This has pushed me to try getting out of my comfort zone - so thanks for that!
ReplyDeleteGet it, girl! Missouri is getting geared up for some perfect scarf + hat weather!
DeleteThis is so inspiring! I'm the same way. I get up the courage to buy those shoes or that hat or that scarf and then I get worried that I might get, what? An extra glance or two? What's my problem? I need to take your advice!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was writing this, I was trying to think back on times when I had worn things out of my comfort zone and genuinely remember if I had ever had an overt negative reaction from anyone. (I'm a sensitive type sometimes....) The positive reactions are so much more common! Literally the only thing I could remember was once, in Hobby Lobby, I had on some rust-colored tights and overheard a lady make a snarky comment to her friend about them. When I glanced at her, she was wearing an oversized Tweety t-shirt under a pink/camo coat. So I think I still win. ;)
