Book Club: Library of Souls

I really should have written this review when I finished the book, because I breezed through it in a single weekend back toward the beginning of the month and I've started reading a couple other things since then. But I'll do my best. :)

Library of Souls is the third novel in a three-part series. The first book, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was one of my favorite reads in the year it was published ( I cannot wait for the movie in December!). It was unique, from the concept to the story to the found antique photographs used in the book. I don't have a huge YA repertoire, and it takes a lot for one to catch and keep my interest. That sounds kind of snobby, and I don't mean for it to; YA just really isn't typically my thing, is what I'm saying.  Miss Peregrine's, however, was very much my cup of tea. It was interesting, well-written, and had a creepy undertone that had me hooked from the beginning.

The second book sort of slipped for me. Hollow City was more action, and less plot--it seemed to be building up to the last book, but didn't tell much of a story on it's own. Once I finished it, I wasn't even sure I could have told you what the point or plot was.  Even though it couldn't stand alone, I was hopeful that Library of Souls would make up for it, since it seemed to be the apex that Hollow City was pushing toward.

Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Library of Souls had action, to be sure, but there was also such great plot progression. Every loose end was tied up, every conflict resolved by the final page. I can't say that it was a happy ending in every single way, but I think that fact kept it from veering too far on the cheesy side, which would have been a tragedy for a book with the tone of this series.

Anyone else read it? What did you think?

  1. I've been meaning to read the entire series for ages. I was a big fan of Ransom Riggs when he wrote for "mental_floss" ages ago, so I read the first book and LOVED it. I've been meaning to read the other two and just haven't had the chance. Might have to snag them from the library!

    1. Two is slow, so if it doesn't keep you interested, just muddle through. Three is worth it!
